Imagine all the good you could do if you were a little more prosperous. God wants us to continually be growing to new levels. Are you ready to expand to a greater level? Are you ready to learn some ideas that can help you have more money? When I was a college professor, I would ask students working on their MBA's why they were working so hard to earn their degree while holding a full-time job with many having families. The answer was always the same “for the money.” Is the pursuit of knowledge about money? No, knowledge is about improving ones self and serving those around you. The key here is these students believed—they believed they would achieve. That is the first step, to believe you can achieve bigger and better things, and that God wants you to be prosperous so you can help others. I believe helping others improves our lives and helps you improve your own.

Prosperity in and of itself is neither good nor bad. Whether prosperity finds you generous or greedy is based entirely on your value system. I believe money is good for the good it can do. I know most of you have the same belief. Money is good for what it can do for you, for your family, and for so many other people and causes we care about.

MONEY: The Root of What?

Money is considered by some to carry a negative connotation. Much of this negative belief comes from misinterpreted teachings about money. The most common misconception is cited from the Bible as, “Money is the root of all evil.” The actual verse is:

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many grieves” (1 Timothy 6:10 NIV).

Is a desire for money always a root of evil? Not always. One can desire money for Christ-centered, not self-centered goals. Paul wrote Timothy to assist the young pastor with his church at Ephesus. The city was very prosperous. In fact, its tourist trade brought in so much revenue the town leaders opened the first world bank. There were many wealthy Christians that came to the church. Paul warns against the “love of money.” But let's be sure we interpret his words correctly. He does not say money itself is evil (nor does any other scripture). Rather the love of money (one's attitude – something inside them, not money itself) can be a cause of trouble.

What should people with money do? Paul says they should first examine their attitudes toward their wealth. Money has a tendency to create feelings of pride, superiority, and self-sufficiency. Do not put your trust in wealth which can be easily lost, but put your faith and trust in God, the original source of wealth. In 1 Timothy 6:17-19 Paul instructs the wealthy:

“Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so they may take hold of the life that is truly life.”

This I believe wholeheartedly.

What is so important about money anyway? Isn't being happy more important? The truth is Americans number one fear is running out of money. The fear has never been greater than today, as major corporations are going under leaving employees with nothing. World Com and Enron's massive fraud left thousands of people unemployed and with a total loss of retirement benefits. The love of money; the greed of a handful of individuals destroyed the financial lives of thousands.

Do not be a victim. It is about taking control of your own financial future. It is about you learning to manage money rather than letting someone else control your finances.

I always hear people say, “God will provide.” I say, God has already provided. Go out and do something with it.”
